In a nutshell, musical interpretation is storytelling. There are characters in a story, and themes in music. A story develops through ornamentation, harmonic tension, and variations on a theme in music.

A classical sonata's primary theme—the "hero," if you will—returns in the recapitulation and leads the contrasting secondary theme triumphantly into the home key. In a classical narrative, the hero saves the fair girl and returns home victorious to live happily ever after.

Additionally, there are elements of performing music that resemble grammar.
These are often notated, and the composer assumes that the listener will be able to "understand" the language and interpret the music.
Perhaps you've heard someone pronounce the incorrect syllable, or perhaps you've done it yourself while learning a new language. In music, some notes are inherently stronger than others.
