Richard Mille gets into the rock spirit with the new RM 66 Flying Tourbillon
Richard Mille kicked off the new year with a big kick. Inspired by the world of rock music and the revolutionary spirit of the Sixties, Richard Mille revolutionized the watch industry once again with the launch of the new RM 66 Flying Tourbillon.
The "Horn To Be Wild" watch is limited to 50 pieces and is full of rock and roll design elements. Perhaps the focal point of this timepiece, however, is the 5N red gold hands that sit in the center of the dial and hold the movement in a 'horn' position. Conceived by Creative and Development Director Cécile Guenat, the five fingers of the hand are first milled and then transferred to the master engraver for perfection – requiring the unparalleled craftsmanship of Geneva-based engraver Olivier Vaucher.

Furthering this rock 'n' roll theme, the grade 5 titanium strap features 5N red gold plate with a "nail of Paris" pattern that mimics a punk belt, and the carbon TPT® bezel gives the watch a texture that almost looks like heavy metal sounds Like the static electricity in the watch, the crown in grade 5 titanium is designed in the shape of a spider, its Gothic-style segments enclosing a ruby and its round black rubber gasket. Even the index point is shaped like a guitar pick, with an arched extension of a lancet made of titanium.
Inside the case, more exciting details emerged. In fact, according to Julien Boillat, the technical director of the case, the timepiece took more than 200 hours to complete: "We spent more than 200 hours on this piece, from development to finalization, in addition to 12 hours. Hours of machining and finishing. A crown. Polishing titanium is much more difficult than polishing gold or steel. Not only that, polishing makes it very difficult to hold the crown without slipping, so we have to use special clamps from the inside Fix that part. So the making of this crown involved subtle alchemy."
The RM66 hand-wound movement, a first for Richard Mille, features a quick-winding barrel at 6 o'clock, providing a 72-hour power reserve, and a tourbillon at 12 o'clock. To ensure the greatest possible transparency, the grade 5 titanium movement is highly skeletonised, enhanced with a complex mechanical solution rarely used by Richard Mille: a flying tourbillon with variable inertia. In addition, the tourbillon frame is only fixed at one end of its axis, and the upper bridge is eliminated, visually highlighting the ethereal quality of the movement. This atypical arrangement, with the movement turned by 180°, provides a dynamic element to the tourbillon.
Exuding luxury design and fine watchmaking craftsmanship, the RM 66 Flying Tourbillon, another dazzling addition to Richard Mille, is now ready to hit the stage.
