The Prevention of Domestic Violence Act New Jersey enacted in 1991, provides protection for victims of domestic abuse and establishes legal consequences for perpetrators. The law covers a wide range of abusive behaviors, including physical abuse, harassment, stalking, sexual assault, and emotional abuse. It applies to individuals in various relationships, including spouses, former spouses, dating partners, cohabitants, and individuals who share a child.
Victims can seek a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO), which can later be made permanent through a Final Restraining Order (FRO) if the court finds sufficient evidence of domestic violence. Violating these orders results in serious legal penalties, including arrest and criminal charges. The law also allows victims to request financial support, custody, and other protections to ensure their safety.
