Southwest Airlines will only operate out of Terminal 1 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as of May 2025. Terminal 1 has undergone extensive upgrades to improve the traveler experience. Southwest Airlines announced that it will end its "Bags Fly Free" policy for the majority of its passengers on May 28, 2025, marking a dramatic change from its long-standing traditions. With this modification, Southwest joins other significant American airlines that impose fees for checked baggage. Nonetheless, elite Rapid Rewards members of Southwest will continue to enjoy the following advantages: A-List members and Southwest credit card holders will continue to enjoy two complimentary checked bags, while A-List Preferred members and travelers on premium price classes will continue to receive one complimentary checked bag. The precise costs for checked baggage have not yet been made public by the airline.
Additionally, beginning in May 2025, Southwest plans to launch a new "Basic Fare" category. Although this fare class will be less expensive, it will have more limitations, including non-refundable tickets, no itinerary modifications, and a limited flight credit validity period. This action is a component of Southwest's larger plan to broaden its customer base and diversify its menu options.
Beginning in early 2026, Southwest LAX Terminal intends to switch from its customary open seating policy to an assigned seating approach. Customer input suggesting a preference for assigned seating, particularly on longer flights, is the basis for this adjustment. Standard, Preferred, and Premium seats will be the new seating options; Premium seats will have more legroom. While some passengers may be assigned seats closer to departure, those who purchase higher fare classes or who have elite status in the Rapid Rewards program will have the opportunity to choose their seats at the time of booking.
