I’ve been trying to reduce household waste and recycle more responsibly, but I’m still confused about one common item: Ziploc bags. This raises an important question are ziploc bags recyclable or trash?
Most of the curbside recycle programs do not accept soft plastics so it is not clear whether the Ziploc bags should go in the bin recycling or the trash. I have been told that they could be recycled in the grocery store drop-off departments sometimes but I am not certain that all varieties of Ziploc bags are recyclable or that it is just some of them. Should them be fully clean and dry and then they can be recycled or is a bit of light residue alright?
The other aspect that I am questioning is reuse. What is the maximum number of times that Ziploc bags should be reused? Do techniques such as hand washing or dishwasher washing cause the plastic to break down during use or do they make the plastic safe?
Should someone have explicit teaching or practical experience, I will be happy to listen. Knowing that Ziploc bags are recyclable or should be regarded as waste would be of a substantial aid to those of us who have attempted to be more environmental-friendly in our decisions.
