Card counting is a technique used in blackjack to track the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the deck. The basic idea is that high cards (10s, face cards, and aces) favor the player, while low cards favor the dealer. By keeping a mental tally, players can adjust their bets and playing decisions to gain a statistical edge. It’s important to note that card counting doesn’t guarantee wins, but it can tilt the odds slightly in your favor when done correctly.

Choosing a Counting System

There are several card counting systems, but beginners often start with the Hi-Lo system due to its simplicity. In this system, cards 2 through 6 are assigned a value of +1, 7 through 9 are 0, and 10s and aces are -1. As cards are dealt, you maintain a “running count” by adding or subtracting based on the cards shown. The higher the running count, the more favorable the deck is for the player.

Converting Running Count to True Count

In multi-deck games, a running count alone isn’t enough because it doesn’t account for how many decks remain. To adjust, players calculate the “true count” by dividing the running count by the estimated number of decks left. The true count gives a more accurate indication of the player’s advantage and helps in deciding how much to bet or whether to deviate from basic strategy.

Adjusting Bets and Strategy

Card counting is not just about keeping a tally—it’s about making informed betting and playing decisions. When the count is high, signaling more high cards remain, players typically increase their bets. Conversely, when the count is low or negative, they decrease bets. Some advanced counters also alter their play strategy, such as standing on lower totals or taking insurance when the count is favorable.

Practicing Discreetly

Casinos actively monitor for card counters, so discretion is crucial. Beginners should practice at home or in low-stakes games to develop fluency in counting without drawing attention. Avoid obvious betting patterns or “big swings” in wagers that can alert casino staff. Many successful counters practice subtlety and consistency rather than flashy moves.

Limitations and Legal Considerations

While card counting is legal in most jurisdictions, casinos reserve the right to refuse service to players suspected of counting cards. It is not cheating because it doesn’t involve altering the cards, but detection can lead to being banned or asked to leave. Additionally, card counting requires significant mental focus and discipline—mistakes can negate any potential advantage.

Final Advice for Beginners

Learning to count cards takes time, patience, and practice. Start with a simple counting system, focus on maintaining accuracy, and gradually incorporate betting adjustments. Remember, card counting is a skill to complement basic blackjack strategy, not replace it. With careful practice and discretion, it can improve your understanding of the game and potentially give you a slight edge over the house.
