I’ve been down a rabbit hole lately, and I’ve come to the conclusion that we don’t give nearly enough credit to one element: silicon.
We think of the digital age as being powered by code, AI, or electricity, but none of it would exist without this single, abundant element. It’s the foundation of virtually every microprocessor, memory chip, and sensor we rely on. That smartphone in your pocket? It’s essentially a highly refined piece of sand performing billions of calculations per second.
What blows my mind is the combination of properties that make it perfect:
It’s a semiconductor: It can be tweaked to either conduct electricity or block it with incredible precision, allowing us to create transistors—the on/off switches that represent data.
It’s abundant: It’s the second most common element in the Earth’s crust (after oxygen). We aren’t fighting over a rare metal for the base of our tech; we’re fighting over the purification process.
It’s stable: It can handle the heat and stress required to run complex computations.
From the first integrated circuit to modern AI chips, the entire revolution has been a story of learning to manipulate sand at an atomic scale.
It’s easy to overlook because it’s literally dirt, but without silicon, modern civilization as we know it would collapse overnight. No internet, no smartphones, no medical imaging, no navigation.
Anyone else ever stop to think about how wild it is that we’ve built a global civilization on the back of refined beach sand?
