Howdy Folks!
Hope you are all doing great! I am currently working on a fun little side project with a couple of friends, a party/event app where people can create events, invite others, maybe share pics, and just keep things social and interactive. It is still early days, but we’re getting to the point where we need a solid backend, and that is where I am a bit stuck.
Since this is more of an MVP right now, we are trying to keep costs at zero (or as close as possible). At the same time, I don’t want to choose something that’ll completely fall apart the moment we get a bit of traction. Ideally, I am looking for something that handles auth, database, and maybe even storage without too much setup or maintenance. Bonus points if it supports real-time features since we might add live updates later.
I have been looking into options like Firebase, Back4app, and Supabase, and they all seem solid, but I keep seeing mixed opinions about how they scale. Some people say they are perfect for quick launches, others say you end up boxed in pretty fast. I have also heard a bit about these backend hosting platforms that let you maintain more control over your backend without having to handle heavy DevOps, which sounds appealing, too.
What I am really trying to avoid is building everything on a platform, only to realize later that it’s too limiting or too expensive to grow with. I’d rather pick something that can carry us from MVP to at least a decent number of users without a full rebuild.
So yeah, if anyone here has built or hosted something similar, especially social apps or event-based platforms, I’d love to hear what you used, what worked well, and what you’d stay away from. Real experiences matter way more than feature lists at this stage.
Appreciate any advice, and thanks in advance.
